5 Things to Look for in Kids Dance Costumes
Share
Shopping for kids dance costumes can feel overwhelming — especially when you're balancing budget, competition rules, comfort, and the very strong opinions of a seven-year-old who has decided she wants "something sparkly and purple."
Here's what actually matters when choosing a dance costume for a child, from a performance and practicality standpoint.
1. Comfort and Freedom of Movement
This is non-negotiable. A child who is uncomfortable in their costume will be distracted — and it will show in their performance.
Look for:
- High-stretch fabrics that move with the body without pulling or restricting
- Comfortable waistbands — nothing too tight or too loose
- No scratchy embellishments on the inside of the costume where they'll be in contact with skin
2. The Right Fit (and Room to Grow)
Kids grow fast. A costume that fits perfectly in March might be snug by the time competition season hits in August.
Tips for getting the fit right:
- Measure before you order — don't rely on age-based sizing alone
- Check the size guide for the specific brand, as sizing varies
- Order a size up if your child is between sizes or due for a growth spurt
At SNS Dancewear, our kids' costumes are available across a range of child sizes — check our size guide before ordering to find the best fit.
3. Durability for Rehearsals and Performances
A competition costume isn't just worn once — it goes through weeks of rehearsals, dress runs, and multiple performances. It needs to hold up.
What to check:
- Quality stitching at seams and stress points (underarms, waistband, leg openings)
- Secure embellishments — rhinestones and sequins should be well-attached, not glued on loosely
- Colourfast fabric that won't fade after washing
- Care instructions — ideally hand wash or gentle machine wash so it stays looking fresh
4. Age-Appropriate Style
This one matters both for competition rules and for keeping parents comfortable. Many eisteddfods and competitions have guidelines around costume coverage for younger age groups — particularly around bare midriffs, cutouts, and costume length.
Always check the specific rules for your competition or eisteddfod before ordering.
5. Stage Presence — Does It Read from the Back Row?
A costume that looks beautiful up close can disappear under stage lighting. For kids' costumes especially, you want something that reads clearly from a distance.
What works well on stage:
- Bold or bright colours that pop under stage lights
- Contrast details that define the silhouette from a distance
- Shimmer or metallic elements that catch the light during movement
- Clean lines that are easy to read even from the back of a large venue
Avoid very pale or white costumes without contrast details — they can wash out under harsh stage lighting.
Bonus: Involve Your Child (Within Reason)
Kids are more confident performers when they feel good in what they're wearing. If your child has a preference — a favourite colour, a style they love — try to incorporate it where you can. A child who loves their costume will wear it with pride.
That said, the final call should always come down to fit, comfort, and suitability for the dance style — not just what looked amazing on Instagram.
