Dance Competition Prep: Everything You Need to Look and Feel Your Best

Competition day is exciting, nerve-wracking, and unforgettable — and the last thing you want is to be scrambling for the right costume or accessories at the last minute. Whether it's your first comp or your fiftieth, a little preparation goes a long way. Here's our ultimate guide to getting ready.

Start with Your Costume

Your costume is your first impression on the judges, so it needs to fit perfectly and move with you. Try your costume on well in advance and do a full run-through in it — you want to know it's comfortable before you're standing in the wings.

Build Your Competition Kit

Pack a dedicated dance bag with everything you might need on the day:

  • Spare tights and hair accessories
  • Safety pins, double-sided tape, and a small sewing kit
  • Bobby pins, hairspray, and your go-to hair products
  • Makeup for touch-ups
  • Snacks and water to keep energy up between performances

Hair and Makeup

Check your studio's requirements — some competitions have specific guidelines. Practice your hair and makeup look at home at least once before the big day so there are no surprises.

The Night Before

Lay everything out the night before: costume, shoes, accessories, and your competition kit. Charge any devices, confirm your start time, and get a good night's sleep. A calm morning starts with a prepared evening.

On the Day

Arrive early, warm up properly, and trust your training. Your costume is ready, your bag is packed — now it's time to shine. 🌟
