How to Measure Your Child for a Dance Costume (Size Guide)

One of the most common questions we hear from dance parents is: "How do I know which size to order?" Getting the right fit is crucial — a costume that's too tight restricts movement, and one that's too loose can become a distraction (or a hazard) on stage. The good news is that measuring your child at home is quick and easy if you know what to look for.

Here's our complete guide to measuring your child for a dance costume. You can also refer to our full Sizing Guide for detailed size charts across our range.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape (not a stiff ruler)
  • A pen and paper to record measurements
  • A helper — it's much easier with two people

Measure over fitted underwear or a leotard, never over bulky clothing.

Key Measurements to Take

1. Chest / Bust

Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it parallel to the floor. Don't pull it tight — it should sit snugly but comfortably. Record in centimetres.

2. Waist

Measure around the natural waist — this is the narrowest part of the torso, usually just above the belly button. Keep the tape relaxed, not cinched.

3. Hips

For 2-piece costumes or bottoms, measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat. Keep the tape level all the way around.

4. Height

Have your child stand straight against a wall (no shoes). Mark the top of their head and measure from the floor to that mark. Height is often the most reliable indicator for dance sizing.

5. Torso Length (for 1-piece costumes)

Measure from the top of the shoulder, down through the crotch, and back up to the same shoulder. This measurement is especially important for 1-piece costumes to ensure the fit is comfortable and doesn't pull.

Tips for Getting It Right

  • Always check the size chart for each specific product — sizing can vary between styles and designers. See our full Sizing Guide for reference.
  • When in between sizes, size up — it's easier to take in a costume slightly than to let one out
  • Account for growth — if your dancer is mid-growth-spurt, consider ordering the next size up, especially for costumes that need to last a full competition season
  • For 2-piece sets, you may need to order top and bottom in different sizes — measure each separately and refer to the size chart for each piece
